Zildjian A Customs

Hey all,

I am keen on the HOD members opinions on these cymbals as I am keen to purchase a ride, 2 crashes maybe a splash or two.

Are these cymbals good for club/bar work?
If so, do they require much miking at all - our band plays mainly blues-rock covers but the venues we play in are not large (mainly clubs/bars).

Love them generally. Crashes are my favorite Zildjians. Like the splashes too with the rides being my least favorite. I have an A Custom Ping which I love for it's glassy sound when played with guitars but I find it a bit much in the wash/ping department a lot of times.

They're easy to crash too which is a nice plus. For overall versatility I one of the heavier K's. (K Heavy for example)

I love the A Customs for crashes/splashes, as they get out of the way quickly, and dont have alot of overtones. As for ride cymbals, I am with Derek. I love my K Custom Medium (22") because it's got a nice dark sound for ballads, nice mellow wash, but a good bell sound for rocking out.

I had an 18" crash, just recently cracked. Wasn't my fave cymbal tho, I thought it was too hard to get a good sound out of it. Maybe I just had a bad cymbal.

I have a 16" that I like a LOT.

What about the A Custom Fast Crashes? I've been thinking of buying one, because my present 18" is too thick. And Fast Crashes are thinner, right?

I have a 14" A Custom crash and i love it, it is my favorite cymbal under 18". The 10" splash i have is great too.

I'm not sure if I own my A Custom Projection Crashes, or if they own me.

Thanks for the replies all! I may steer away from the ride option - I've always been a K fan too.

Steve - what's the difference between the A Custom crashes vs the sound projection ones? They all have a 'brilliant' finish right?
Are they good for recording & live playing?

That ride Vinnie plays on the A Custom video sounds pretty good, the "Crazy Town" cymbal. May be too ringy for some tastes and applications though.

I have a 17" projection crash which I LOVE and a regular 20" ride....the ride can get washy at times, but it's a great all-around cymbal, plus as Derek says, they're easy to crash. I use that ride most of the time, but also have a K Custom and a 21" platinum rock for alternates.

Ultimately, as Vinnie says on the A custom vid, we should be able to make our cymbals work for us in any situation. I've seen Anthony Cole play numerous times with the Sam Rivers trio and big band, mostly using (all old) kick, snare, hat, and one or two cymbals, and it sounds INCREDIBLE every time....his time and musicianship is such that he doesn't really need anything else.
